After the clinic and the first AR design class, formulate 3 questions related to your research and the course.
– How could Artistic Research help you in a musical sense?
– What forms could you give your research? Blog, portfolio, written thesis, playing a concert? Are there any resources for it, and how long should it be/what size should it have?
– Are there any differences between writing a thesis and doing Artistic Research? If yes, could you mention (some of) them?
Hi Marijke,
Your subject of the Concert Master is an interesting one. There are two (?) students in Job’s Year 2 group who are looking as a similar idea. The purpose of the research is to feedback into your playing (or in your case, directing). You therefore need to show where you start, then use what you learn through your research to demonstrate observable progress! Your research can take one or more of many forms, but the important part to start thinking about at this moment is what you would specifically like to achieve by the end and what you need to learn in between in order to achieve it. It may be a bit semantic, but a thesis can be seen as more academic/musicological (i.e., not necessarily as a ‘musician’) approach to research. I the case of Codarts, the expectation is that you can show your improvement/progress as a musician – and the written part, the REPORT, supports this by showing the steps that you took and the information you gathered along the way.
We will discuss this further in class and in our one-on-one meeting.
